Round table top base overhang calculator?

Is there a rule of thumb for how wide the base should be vis-a-vis the diameter of the top?

I have read that no more than 1/3 of the top should overhang the base. My base will taper out to the floor, so I am interested in the minimum diameter that I can make the footprint of the base.

The top will be 1/2" glass; 72" diameter.

Being sure takes some work with geometry, calculation of the weight of material either side of the tipping point, and what leverage can be applied. Working out c of g as Dave suggested will help. Be aware though that your base is not circular so the tendency to tip is worst mid way between two legs. Also this is not a time to work to the minimum. Much better to work to the maximum base/minimum leg room. Cheers

How about adding a ring to the base for more stability.
