    1st project

Hey everyone I've just completed my first project. A dining table for my family. Basically, I just wanted to thank all of the contributors to this site, as it gave me information, techniques, and opinions to study, practice, and put to work. Without this forum, the project would have been riddled with big mistakes. It's definitely not perfect, but I'm super happy with it. Thanks a million for taking the time to post amazing content.

Hey Bruce. Wood conditioner, then Chestnut gel stain...only let it sit about 1.5-2 minutes before removing excess. I ended up using minwax satin polyurathane. 3 liberal coats top and bottom. Would have loved to use an oil, but it has to withstand the abuse of kids. Maybe i’ll refinish it in a couple decades. Likely not though.

Nice job. (After 25 years, my tenons are no where near as good as yours. I have benefited from burying them in the mortice.) Congratulations on your success and best wishes for future projects.
Rustic? Well, no. That was not my intention!

Very nice Rob, that slab is huge! Is it black walnut? Gives a nice holiday feel.

Hey Mark. Thanks! It’s actually ash. But yeah, it’s a monster. The table is 6.5’ long and just over 48” at its widest part.

Thanks for the compliment David. I definitely took my sweet arse time with them. I used a technique that i got from a video Paul Sellers posted.

Only difference was that i preferred to use a pull saw to do the shoulder cuts.

+1. And you used M&T joinery? Wow! It took me years to try that. Good for you!
