    Paint, poly, paint??

    Hello

I decided to make another set of Adirondack chairs but this time I used construction grade lumber from Lowes that I milled down.

The person who wants them wanted them to be black. I didn't like how stain took to this wood so I used Krylon Fusion matte black spray paint. It looked great until I added 3 coats of Helmsman spray spar urethane to protect from Arizona sun.

Aside from looking like it has an over spray finish it's now satin and I don't care for it. I'm thinking of putting on another coat of black Krylon as the final coat.

    Is this acceptable?

Turn the chair upside down and do a test underneath. If it works, you have a chance. The rule book went out the window a while back I think...! Cheers

My opinion is that the Krylon is a more durable finish than the Helmsman "spar" polyurethane varnish. I had a very unsatisfactory experience with it. There is no telling whether these two dissimilar materials are compatible with each other. You need to try any new finish schedule on scrap material before committing your real project to it.

Barrier coat of dewaxed shellac between the poly and paint? That's an accepted technique for indoor furniture, don't know how it would work outdoors.

I actually contacted Krylon and was told poly can go over the spray paint after 48 hours... or something. Maybe I'm being picky due to it being black and literally everything shows on it. Looks great in the pictures. Looks great in front of me. But when I get up close and start really looking, ugh. Also, I wish the finish was matte.

Whatever, I'll consider myself picky and be done with it.

    Thanks and Merry Christmas.
