    speaking of shooting boards...

I've always wondered what keeps the plane from digging into the piece of wood that it runs against and that guides it? The only shooting board build I've seen that addresses this is Cosman's where he cuts a blade width off the edge of the 1/4 bb ply he's using so that the guide the plane rides on is below the planes cutter. Do all shooting boards incorporate something like this? The Veritas shooting board guide has a small lip the plane rides against. Never had one but it's time to build one, me thinks. And in Cosman's vid he puts a slight crown on the board. Is this common as well? Thanks for any info. And fyi, I know nothing about metal working. Just sayin...

Not at all, though Cosman explained why he did so.

    Not a machinist here either.

I've been impressed with vids showing Cosman's use of the shooting board.

Shucks, our cat needed a trip to the vet this afternoon so this post got by me today. But now you know.

My shooting boards are usually made from better piece of scrap from around the shop. They don't need to be fancy to work.

Here is my most recent board making and using:

This one can be used lefty or righty.

thanks guys. I'm gonna start with something plain and simple. Won't know what tweaks I need until I use it for a while. But Cosman's build is pretty meticulous, and probably the direction I'll head in.

Nothing, but it really doesn't matter the blade will form its own groove. As for the crown, I think that's typical Rob Cosman hyper accuracy . Not necessary IMO.

I like the versions with fences that have a rabbet and are fastened by a press fit into a runner. This give the option of bumping the fence over to maintain zero clearance.

Before you commit to the Cosman version, you might want to take a look at Paul Seller's version also has an option for 45°.

I also like Tim Rousseau's version (see article in Fine Woodworking).
