    Stumbled across Ken Hatch's Moravian bench build in Neanderthal Haven and I think that style base structure is going to be just perfect for what you're trying to do. It's very sturdy but can also be knocked apart so it should make it easier to remove your top later to work on the glue up than other designs. Ken seems to have a real grasp on this type of construction, so I recommend you ask his advice for the base.
