    Jointer Vibration

    Afternoon all,

I have a Steelex ST1101 jointer (same as the Grizzly G0490). I've had it about a year but haven't use it all that much. The vibration was really bad when I first assembled it and I took some time to correct it before it's first use. I thought I had everything lined up but there is definitely still some vibration (push pads will move across the tables if left set). Since I don't use it all that often I've been reluctant to take the time to address the vibration. I have a few days off next week so I figured I'd try to get it dialed in if it's needed.

How much vibration is okay? What are the effects on the machine from the vibration? Should a jointer pass the nickel test?

    Thanks

    Sounds like too much.

Remove belts and run motor uncoupled.

See if belts have a "set"

    Try link belts

It’s probably just a loose pulley.
Sometimes there’s two set screws in one hole so make sure you tighten the one that contacts the shaft.

I've only owned two machines that performed the jointing/flattening operation...a 6" Jet many years ago and my MiniMax FS350 J/P. Neither of them had/have any vibration at all. If your motor, belt and pulleys are all secure and in line, your machine should be "rock smooth" when operating. If not, perhaps you have an out-of-balance cutter head...

Make sure the motor is bolted down tight.

I had a lumpy belt that caused vibration. Switched to a twist lock after several years and the problem went away.

Thanks for the tips, all. I'll give them a try this weekend.
