    Wood Finishing School

Does anyone know of a weekend school that teaches wood finishing? Would prefer something in the middle of the country. Not looking for a professional type school but just a good weekender school where can learn more of basics. If no weekend a sort week day class may work.

If you can't find something, perhaps contact some of the woodworking schools and ask. For example, Lonnie Bird (up the road from me) in TN, at https://www.lonniebird.com/about-the...orking-school/

You may need to narrow things down to a more specific (set of) topic(s). Finishing is pretty broad.

I've always enjoyed reading Don Williams write about historic finishes. His website says he offers classes on historic finishing techniques, though I don't see any scheduled. If it sounds interesting you could contact him and ask:

I don't know of a finishing school (not the kind you mean, anyway) Seriously, consider reading a book called Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner or Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Wood Finishing by Jeff Jewitt. Those books and fooling around with scrap pieces will take you a long way. IMO brush technique is the hardest to learn from a book but it can be done if you practice. (Probably spraying is harder to learn but I don't do that)

Not sure what your definition of middle of the country is, but the Marc Adams School of Woodworking south of Indianapolis has a wide range of weekend and week long classes, including a number of different finishing classes. If I'm not mistaken, there is usually a weekend color theory class at least once each year.

First link that comes up when you Google "Charles Neil" is : http://www.cn-woodworking.com/

His web site can be a bit disjointed sometimes but all the info is there to find links to contact him, his books, videos and courses.

And his YouTube channel is here : https://www.youtube.com/user/InTheWorkshop

I'm a big fan of Bob Flexner. His book is the end-all for finishing in my shop. I have made dozens (maybe hundreds!) of test boards over the years, and taught myself all sorts of hand finish techniques (no spraying). The hardest to get the hang of was french polishing - but all it took was practice. I'm pretty good at it now.
