I've done a pile of laser marquetry in the 16 years since this thread started...here are a couple...
(and I have no idea why that first photo is upside-down) They're all about 24" in the shorter dimension.

Now all I need to do is figure out why cellphone pictures end up at odd orientations when used as attachments here: it never happens with files coming out of my cameras.
Does the vBulletin software ignore the orientation tag in the metadata? I tried rotating that first photo in the computer and uploaded it again, same result. (Not sure if Windows actually turns the picture or just diddles the tag.) And I just realized the fourth picture is sideways...

The really complex one is a file I got long ago here, originally derived from an antique table-top. I'd have to look at the file, but as I recall that one has over 500 pieces...and there's another outer ring that I left off because it was getting too big.
Lower-right is a chunk of Penrose tiling, which has some interesting topological properties. (Google it.)
