I just completed the bottom cabinet for the cherry hutch. Time to work on the top of the unit.A147BDB2-9653-43D7-B277-29A27947F0D3.jpg0F892B14-7EC9-4133-874E-BAE32155CBDA.jpg0F892B14-7EC9-4133-874E-BAE32155CBDA.jpg

thanks Jim and Von!
Very nice! Would you mind sharing some details? Dimensions? Finish? Some construction hints?
Thanks Jay, the hutch is ultimately going to be 44 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 84 inches tall. It is from Fine Woodworking Jan/Feb 2007. Martin Milkovits wrote the article, but I ordered the project plans which are fantastic - very detailed and well done. Most of the construction is frame and panel, and mortise and tenon. I did most with handtools. The finish was hand planed, 5 coats of 1lb cut shellac wiped on, and the top 400 grit lightly sanded, 0000 steel wool and then paste wax. Drawers are hand cut dovetails with poplar construction. Iron hand forged hinges from Amos of Pequea Hinges, Lancaster County. I will post some more photos.

Beautiful.
Very nice! Look forward to seeing the top.
beautiful! How will you finish it? Where'd you get the pulls?
Thanks Scott, Julian, and Prashun. Prashun, I just put 5 coats of thinned shellac (1lb cut) and 2 layers of paste wax - I wanted to have a very thin finish that let the wood show. If it doesn’t hold up, I will put something more durable on. Unlike you I am not a turner - I got the pulls from Nice Knobs.
