Exclamation Japanese chisels setup and sharpening...

Japanese chisels setup and sharpening by the Japanese.

Accidentally I found that couple of videos. This one for set up your new (Japanese) chisels and this for sharp them. It looked me a little bit odd how he sharp it, but it looks he know what he is talking about.

I hope you enjoy the video.

Good timing, I have a set of Japanese paring chisels that were just delivered. Not that I need to set a hoop on them, but they will need to be sharpened!

    Thanks,

What was odd about the sharpening, specifically?

I take the handle off to set the hoop so that I can drive the hoop on with the setter, I’ve not had a hoop loosen after I started doing that.

The way I work I will find a loose hoop if they’re going to loosen. Mortising will usually be the tell-tale of wether or not your approach to hoop setting works.

Sharpening looked pretty standard to me too. He's a little more deliberate and meticulous than I am, but I've never worked with Japanese chisels though.

His sharpening technique looks good. I see he is using the same side sharpening method that I invented.
