    Wood ID? Hickory?

Friend lost a tree in some bad storms- fortunately it missed her brand new home by a few feet- they moved in last week.

Anyways I offered to make some bowls out of it. It is VERY dense and heavy. I hope I can process it into blanks.

Any thoughts on what it is?
    Where did I put that?

    Almost certainly hickory.

The big center leaf is a giveaway. The rings of dark spots (bird pecks maybe?) are also often seen on hickory (and pecan).

ETA: also the immature hickory nut in the last picture. Haha.

If it is hickory there should be hickory nuts on it this time of year.

Great turning wood--cut it greenish, very hard when dry--smells bad cuts good.

Yea- I’m thinking thin NE bowls turned once. I may try to get a nested set of regular bowls out of one piece.
    Where did I put that?
