Thread: Routing a curved edge.

    Routing a curved edge.

I need to make a molding to go around a curve (1/4 of circle). I've come up with a plan to use the same bit as the straight pieces. I have a 10" circle and I'll cut out an 8" circle to match the curve. Question - what about when the grain goes against the bit rotation? Am I crazy to attempt this? See the picture attached.

I can’t see the attachment but there are two general rules.
Route in the correct direction for each section of the wood.
Take most of the wood off before making a final cleanup pass (or passes).

It appears that you plan to mould the edge of a solid disc and then slice off a 2" wide quarter circle. Follow Mike's advice and make successive light cuts. Don't climb cut with hand feeding a router table. Pick the cleanest cut section and use that. If you need a clean cut all the way around the disc, since you seem to be using a half round profile you could flip the piece over to run with the grain on each quarter circle, making sure that the profile is centered on the stock thickness.

    Thanks for the advice.
