Thanks again to Dave Anderson for input on general re-handle info for hammers.
I got the two blacksmith hot punch hammers at 2 separate estate sales within 2 weeks of each other
The 1" diam. one had no handle in it at all; smaller hammer (3/8") had a handle but the wood was pretty dried out and cracking. Tried to get some hickory but it looked like I was going to have to purchase a lot more wood than needed for job.
Guy at local lumber yard gave me a piece of ash which I got both
handles out of. Made a point of going back to get there to get some lumber as a paying customer to remake a toeboard on the entrance ramp on our screen porch. Took the 2 hammers along to show the young fellow.
Used the existing handle from smaller hammer as a pattern and tried to make them
same profile. This didn't pan out exactly; however, snug fits. Probably hangers anyhow.
2-3 wipe-ons of Tung Oil applied.
