sterling silver inlay on jewelry box lid

    Hello all

With mothers day approaching, I am working on a small walnut jewelry box for my wife. I had the idea to inlay a sterling silver pendant on the top of the lid for decoration. Originally, I was just planning to router out an inset, rattle-can it black for contrast, then CA glue the pendant in place (may or may not go with the black, gonna depend on how the finish turns out). My only worry with this method is that as time goes on I don't know if the CA glue will continue to hold or maybe begin to get cloudy, and with it being exposed, the pendant will eventually tarnish. I cant imagine that it would be very easy to clean while attached to the lid, or even be the cause for it to pop loose.

A second though I had was to polish the pendant, then embed it in place with clear epoxy. I've never used epoxy before so I am not sure if this is even a viable option. My worry with this option is more of an appearance concern, the epoxy finish will definitely have a different sheen to it than the rest of the box. I am planning on finishing the box with tung oil and wipe on poly.

I am still leaning heavily toward the first option. I think the exposed pendant will look much better, even if dirtier.

I was hoping to get this part of the box done this weekend, so in a time of indecision, I thought it prudent to present it to the experts!
If anyone has been through something similar, I would love to hear how they tackled it and if it worked out for them.
As always, other ideas are welcome as well.

I'll try to attach a couple pics below of what I'm doing.

    Ryan

I think a clear coat on the pendant then CA the bottom of it to the recess?

I made a music box over 30 years ago and applied a sterling silver rose to it with CA glue. It is still there. You can buy polishing cloths that will keep the tarnish off without using liquid or paste polish.

Nice looking box, by the way.

You could use a blunt point punch to expand the circumference to make it fit tightly.

Never thought about coating the pendant itself. Definitely going to put some thought into this. Thank you!

Thats a good idea, however, I think i took a little too much out with the router to trust it would hold without warping the edge too much.
