    Thanks guys for the feedback. It was extrememly light and I got it in my mind that it was something other than pine.

    Yea, I'll jump on the pine bandwagon here, too, based on the two photos. I'm guessing it's a variety of white pine based on the same.

    It is hard to say from the pictures, but I wouldn't rule out a type of spruce either, given how much harder the growth rings appear compared to the earlywood. If the wood when sawn has that pine smell, I'd say pine, but if it doesn't I might say spruce. They both can be quite light. If it has a really sweet smell, I'd say sugar pine actually.
