    I can make any size wood tap correctly with 90 degree threads (V threads). Unfortunately,the tool steel 3' bar of drill rod is pretty expensive in the larger sizes. When you get up to 2" drill rod,it can cost about $200.00 if I recall correctly. Then,the labor is added to that.

    I don't advise trying to make a large tap out of a soft steel bolt. Might work in smaller sizes,but bolts are usually made of crappy leaded steel which is VERY soft. It is easy to turn on a lathe,and so it is used.

    I'll keep looking for someone who can make me a 90 degree thread tap. For now I'll make a vise screw and nut using my 60 degree tap.

    What wood should I buy? Lake Erie uses maple... what about beech or white ash?
