Chiseled textured finish for a cross.

Our church had some things destroyed in the storms, and I was asked to replace them. One was a cross puzzle they use in children’s church. I was told that it needed to have a rough surface and to be painted purple. I immediately thought of a texture I had seen before done with a gouge. It came out much better than I expected. I don’t usually paint my work, but I love the purple and the textured surface looks great painted.

The purple has significance with the first Sunday in Lent, and there is a reason for there being six pieces to the puzzzle, and sadly I don’t know the specifics of why but I followed instructions!

How big is the cross? What is the underlying species?

Each leg is 4” wide and the whole thing is about 16” tall. I used Poplar since it was getting painted.

Nicely done, Malcolm! I’ve had that texturing on my to do list to try for some time. It looks great. Love the purple.
Lent is 46 days (40 not including Sundays)...so basically 6 weeks.

Could you describe how you created the gouge texture? I love the way it looks.

I would say that you met the specifications wonderfully. Nice work!

    Very nice.

I have a cross that a friend made from a section of log. He left a base heavy enough to support it , then cut the cross out with a chainsaw. Very rough texture. He painted it black and added red blood streaks down its length and flowing off the crude base where it angled just right.

It is simply a bunch of divots made with a small gouge. It took a lot less time than expected.
