    What kind of wood is this

    I'd say it's drift wood. :-)
    Maker of Fine Kindling, and small metal chips on the floor.

    If it's a small piece of beach driftwood it might be a "son of a beech" :-)

    Wood ID humor, good fun! Trying to sea the grain got me all tide up, now I'm feeling eel, stung, er, stunned by the rays.

    It might take more than a photo to ID wood that may have been floating in the ocean for some time. You might need to examine the end grain with a magnifier. It could have come from Australia or Africa or Atlantic City.

    This thread seams fishy to me....Did you find a note inside the wood?
