    Question Restoring marples mortise gauge?

    Hey peoples,

I got one of these second hand for 20€: https://imgur.com/a/P3GPH

The "inner" brass is REALLY tight in there, I can move it with my fingers but it's pretty tough.

I tried sliding both brass slider and stock to the "back" of the mortise bit by bit, but when the stock is about 1.5cm from the edge they both get stuck pretty hard. I only tried by hand so far.

Any hints on making this thing work better? How about getting the brass/stock off the stem?

    grts,

The wood may have swollen with moisture and trapped the brass. Or the sliding dovetail for the brass may have an obstruction. Or both.

Try drying out the gauge first, and rubbing a little wax in the sliding dovetail/groove.

After so prying and pulling I finally got it apart, cleaned the slightly rusted brass bits, cleaned out the groove and it's good as new now
