Need to remove the chuck from my drill press

It is time to replace the bearings so I need to remove the chuck. In a few videos they use a tapered drift in the shaft slot. As I do not have one I was wondering if anyone has used something as a substitute?

Find a piece of BORG HR steel bar, 1/4 or 3/16 thick and 1-1/4 to 2 wide. Cut, file, or grind a taper on it. Insert and 'whack' (a highly technical term).

HR might not last long, but it should do the job at hand.

Got it off with a chunk of wood. Having a challenge getting the bottom bearing off. Going to a auto parts store to see if they can do the removal and new install.

i put my quill in the deep freeze for a few hrs, and then heated up the old bearing with a torch.

to put back on, I stuck the bearing in the toaster oven (at about 250 to not damage it) (don't tell loml) and the quill in the deep freeze. seemed to help.
