The garage floor at my place was polished and the basement wasn't. I really dislike the polished floor as it is very slippery! My shop is in the basement accordingly. I wear good shoes and have mats. I have lots of arthritic joints. The mats make a big difference.

If you want to make a floor grippy, spray contact cement on it from a good distance. It wears off eventually, but it lasts quite a while even with daily use.

A shop I worked at had a table saw that had a really slippery spot in front of it. Every 3-4 months somebody would drag the glue pot over there and hose down the floor.

It sucks to sweep in those spots though.

Even though the floor in my new shop is shiny, it hasn't gotten slippery unless something was spilled there like wax or mineral oil. Running around with a damp broom occasionally does a good job of picking up the mega fine stuff and it feels good under foot. Time will tell though, I'm sure after enough years it'll still get slippery.
