    Talking Small Gloat

A friend and fellow woodworker has been trying to get me to come to his place and take some wood. Finally got around to it yesterday.

The reason for "small" gloat is that the largest piece is 12" die, but some VERY interesting pieces. Five are persimmon(3 with the black spalt and 2 with a small black dot) Three pieces of Apple (pink looking). The balance is Mulberry Crotch pieces.

Sealed all pieces today and am going to wait till spring to start turning any of it. Hope the spalted ones don't crack in the pith. I want to turn an end grain bowl to show off the beautiful figures.

    Thanks for lookin'

Nice score Bruce! Good luck with that Persimmon, keep an eye on it. I have some that looks a lot like the 3 spalted pieces that I've had nothing but problems with. It didn't just split, it popped open!

  5. Great wood score, Bruce!

The only Persimmon I've turned was from a dead, fairly dry log. It was also eaten up with worms and ants. I did manage to find a solid piece in it and got a pretty nice bowl from it that I gave to the folks whose yard the tree came from.

Good luck with that wood! I wouldn't be able to wait until Spring if it were me....

Good find Bruce. I have never found persimmon with that much black in it. Now I can see why they call it American ebony.
