    Cedar find

Was driving along today and saw this guy cutting up a huge fallen cedar tree...screeeeech, backup, jump out of the car:
"Hey Mister, whatcha gonna do with all that wood?"
"The man says leave it here, he's gonna burn it."
Me with a crestfallen, sad eyed look: " Aw, heck"
    "Why you ask?"
"Well I just got a lathe and I'm trying to learn, but I can't get any wood to practice on. Is the owner home?"
    "Naw, he just left."
Me shuffling dejectedly back to my car "OK, thanks."
"Wait a minute. How much you need?"
"Well that little piece of trunk there would be nice." (bats eyelashes and flashes a fetching smile)
"Come on, I'll put it in your truck for you. He's got wood back there he's been gonna burn for years and it's all rotten. He don't need that little piece of trunk wood. How bout this 'un? Give you a little more to work with."
"Wow! Thanks, Mister! Here's a little something for your trouble!"
Happy! Happy! Happy! I love to turn cedar!

Looks like it was two trunks grown totally together. I figure the center slab will include that merge line and hopefully it will have a little more figure than the other parts. Gonna wait for my buddy to come over with his long bar saw. If I try to use my 18" bar on it I will have to go from each side and knowing me, I will end up with a saw step on the slab and I hate those!

  7. Congrats on the wood, Carole! Looks like some great stuff! I think I can smell it from here...

Carole, if I tried batting my eyelashes down here someone would likely say, "Those da.... knats shore are bad this year ain't they?" Smiling never hurt any time you are getting free wood, congratulations. I turned down some cedar the other day until the guy said it was from a root, then I said I believe I would try some of it. The problem is I have to go get it, but he will load it with his front-in-loader. Tuning cedar is nice, but watch out for the cracks.

Clearly, you know how to get good wood...
