Hello,
Here is the piece of figured maple that I was working on at Ray's place. I'll try to add a profile shot as soon as I can get a good one.
It's about 7" x 1-3/4"
Best wishes,
Dave

Dave,
It blows my mind how you guys and gals can hollow something like that out through such a little hole. Kind of like the ship in the bottle!

It was amazing! I watched how he...CENSORED...then he put the two...CENSORED...then finished it. Totally amazing!Originally posted by Bob Lasley

Looks like Dave went and hacked my post. Guess he didn't want me to tell you guys how he did it!

I really like the figure in that piece. Hope we get to see you in April,

Okay, I'll tell.
Here's the first one I did a few years ago. (A little the worse for wear after a couple of rough moves, but it was never as attractive as Jason's.)

The main trick is to use a bandsaw to cut the blank in half like a sandwich, hollow out the interior, and glue it back together again.
As you can't see, the joint is invisible.
However, there are several subsidiary tricks. It helps to have a lot of contrasty grain, and wenge is great for this. However, an even better trick is to ensure that the joint is actually below the outer edge, i.e. just under the curve where it doesn't catch the eye. And finally, after you make the cut, do NOT be tempted to turn the edges smooth on the lathe. It's important to glue it back together with the grain perfectly registered, and you'd lose that ability if you remove any material. Besides, the original cut helps you to achieve this registration easily, because it will be imperfect.
Sorry, Jason.
Cheers, Garrett
Dave, Great looking as usual! I have what's left of that board sitting in my wood rack awaiting a proper place to highlight it! Maybe a box lid or something. Definitly not a turning cause I don't do round WWing! I don't suppose you'll be able to make it to my "Pond Voyage - Fade to black" Party on March 1st??? Love to see you come!

Dave, Every time I see one of your pieces it reminds me how bad I am at turning. It also motivates me to play with my lathe a little more. This vessel looks really nice.

I really wasn't trying to fool anybody, I have posted a couple of these on the Pond with an explanation. I guess I should have added it here too!!
They are fun to do and a great use for all the 4/4 lumber I have laying around.
Thanks,
Dave

Man, I would love to be there, but finances will allow only one trip for me. I hope to see you at Ray's in April.
But please.... take lots of pics...
Dave
That thing really turned out great! I think I'm going to give that piece of maple you gave me a shot and I'll bring it up to Rays and show it to ya'. Hopefully I'll have better results than the first try.
Looking forward to the get together in April.
Kurt
BTW...are you hugging that lathe in your Avatar?????

I looked all over for a scrap of that maple after the party, but didn't find so much as a chip. Now I know where to look.Originally posted by D.McDonnel "Mac"
