Thread: Favorite Videos?

    Favorite Videos?

I've been burning my eyeballs to raisons lately viewing instructional videos suggested by other forum members. One of my favorites so far is Mounting Bowl Blanks: Recess, Tenon & Faceplate by Reed Gray. I'm sure most of you have seen it but here's a link to it anyway. What are your favorite videos?

I'm a big Reed Gray fan too.

The AAW has just launched a resource site for turning videos. These have been vetted for good practices. Many more videos will be added as it grows.

Hi Doug ... does one have to be an AAW member to view the videos?

Apparently not because I just viewed a couple of them and I'm not a member (yet). They appear to be links to the actual videos hosted elsewhere.

No, but they have an ad and menu link hoping you will become a member! The journal itself is probably worth the membership cost.

Along with Robo's, I've gotten a lot out of Mike Peace,John Lucas, Stuart Batty & Lyle Jamison's internet videos. Our club has hundreds of books & videos from the likes of Ellsworth & Raffan and too many other famous names to list out.

There are lots of good one. I think you will have to narrow the topic down to what you need at the time.
For clear and detailed my favorites would be by either of the Battys (Allan or Stuart)
Here is a link to some of Stuart's. https://vimeo.com/woodturning/videos...rmat:thumbnail

Here is one by his dad, Allan. Although it says skew chisel it is not as complete as say Alan Lacers but is much more detailed for pommels.

Hi Tim, as mentioned above, nope. This resource and some others like the forum/gallery http://www.aawforum.org/ are available to non-members. I'll second that the Journal itself is worth membership. Not only can you see wonderful work but there are detailed instructions on many "how did they do that?!" techniques.

I don't have a favorite one, I have a few favorites that I like to watch. Why pick one favorite, when you can learn from so many? The new AAW video site is nice and it has a fair amount of videos on it, but, I wouldn't limit myself to viewing only the videos they approve.

I have a big list at YouTube, playlists in categories such as Turning Bowls, Tool Techniques, Skew Specific, and several more. Some might not be my faves anymore, if I put them on a long time ago. I think the list is public:

I subscribe to Reed (Robo Hippy), Jon Lucas, Lyle Jamieson, anything I can find by either of the Batty's, and several others. The Allan Batty video Doug linked to is one I return to again and again -- it's fantastic and made me realize how versatile and manageable a skew can be, even for a mere mortal.

I just remembered this list. The list itself will probably make your eyeballs burn.

This will open at projects and there are quite a few under each project; some have sub categories such as bowls which has 16 sub categories.
Under Channels it link a particular turner, the number of videos, and the number of subscribers. Such as Carl Jacobson has 471 videos, 112,000 subscribers, and almost 20 million views. Click on their name and it will take you to a full listing of their videos with pics and titles.
New wood turing videos are under (of course) New Videos.... 103 last month. Updated monthly.

For tool work better look up Brian Havens on the tube. You'll be glad you did.

Robo, video is good as usual. I will add this. For roughing out I prefer to use a single screw or a small faceplate with 3 longer screws and then turn around to a reverse dovetail after the rough stuff. Also I use a dovetail recess rather than a straight hole via a foster bit. I turn it while still on the faceplate. Also included should be a single screw mention and glueblocks which are both useful and necessary in some cases. Robo, I like your chuck--mine will look like that after a good cleaning.

    Steve,
If you are interested in mounting blanks, Mike Peace has a very comprehensive video on the subject. Go to www.aawvideosource.org and select "Chucks & Centers" and "Techniques" in the drop down boxes. It is about an hour and a half long, but covers about every way to hold wood on a lathe.
    Way south of most everybody...
