    Never used a ROS to sand between coats, don't think I ever will. Have about 20-25 5" air sanders between my department and the finishing department all have variable and yet full throttle is all that is used. Same with a belt sander, the only time I use variable speed is when I accidentally touch it by mistake.

    I have a Mirka Ceros and use the variable speed all the time. I use it when I'm flattening a finish, especially when I'm doing a full filled finish. When I'm sanding doors I use the sander to break the edges, so I slow it down to about half speed so it's not so aggressive.

    I use my variable speed Porter Cable sander at slower speed when sanding very small parts that I hold in my hand.
    No PHD, but I have a DD 214

    I will not even look at a single speed tool if one is available with variable speed..... For some reason I always find projects that need variable spped.
