    This. If your tools are set up to run on 240v, you can make a NEMA 14-30 to 6-30r (or whatever matches the plug on your tools) adapter out of a dryer cord. If you're going from 4 wire to 3 wire, just securely cap off the neutral (white).

    Yes you can run your shop unless you have some really big equip like 5HP you will need bigger wiring.

    Based on your initial question, your knowledge of electrics indicates you should DEFINITELY hire an electrician.

    Believe me, in the long run you will be way better off, not just from a safety standpoint, but he can help you figure out the most efficient circuit patter, whether a subpanel is in order, etc.
