    Chisel Hardware

I'm thinking about turning my own chisel handles. Do you guys know where I can find just the hardware? I can only seem to find chisels with handles.

    Thanks!

Oh and here is the inspiration for this: http://www.finewoodworking.com/woodt...-the-shop.aspx

Flea markets, the 'Bay, thrift stores, yard sales. If you want new chisels, a blacksmith or machinist would be good choices.

Lee Valley etc. sells P & N turning tools. Pex fittings with the small end cut off make excellent ferrules.

If you use CA (super glue) on the leather ends and get it really soaked in you can then turn the leather rather than sanding it.

  5. Chefwarekits sells a set. For $15 i'm not sure how good the steel is, but at least they come "pre-sharpened".

I've bought quite a few quality chisels ( I really like the W. Butcher stuff) at markets as well as on line, turned my handles to my taste, and have come up with some nice items that have served me well.
    That's my choice.

On the other hand, I still have five fingers.

A lot of my chisels (socket style) came from ebay or searching antique shops and the Restore (part of Habitat for Humanity). Often they come with handles that do not suit me. So a new handle is made. After a bunch build up they can be sold for a few bucks on ebay.
