    3 amigos - PICs

I applied a coat of finish to these three bowls last night and left them on the patio table. This morning I decided to take a couple pictures. Not the best setting but my photo booth is piled high with valuable stuff(in other words junk). The bowls have been finished with 3 coats of Rockler’s gel polyurethane.

From left to right, wild cherry, madrona, and white oak.
    <p><img src="http://www.woodnheart.com/Alcohol/amigos/wildch.jpg"><p/>
Wild cherry with bark inclusion. 9 1/4" x 3 ½" high and 3/16" thick. I tried to sell the roughed out bowl on ebay for $25. It is a little more pricey now. Notice the limb in the bottom. This is not a blank normal people would turn. However, I have had good success drying such pieces using the alcohol method.

Madrona bowl 8 ½" x 3 1/4" high and ½" thick. It was soaked for 3 days in alcohol and experienced very little distortion and no cracking. I didn’t plan to soak the bowl that long but my memory isn’t what it used to be.
    <p><img src="http://www.woodnheart.com/Alcohol/amigos/wo.jpg"><p/>
White oak bowl 8 ½" x 2 ½" high and 3/8" thick. White oak has wonderful grain. I use a sharp scraper to finish the inside and have little problem with tear out or tool chatter. This bowl was also alcohol soaked for drying.

    Thanks for looking.

The Cascara bowl is my favorite. I would post the bowls that I turned this weekend, but they exploded on me. Hey, the way I look at it, if this stuff was too easy, I'd lose interest. Great work and form.

Never seen cascara before, thanks for showing it to me. Where is it grown? I sharred your alcohol drying method with a guy from Australia, and he was impressed. I am turning bowls this summer up in East Glacier, Montana. I like all the bowls.

Dave: All three are well done. I particularly like the cherry. The grain in it has more going on than I normally see. Very pretty.

    The bowl is madrona.

    Hi Glenn,

The bowl is madrona. I do have some cascara but it is small, about 4". Cascara bark is harvested and dried for the making of laxative. Because the bark is stripped off the trees they don't get too big. I don't know if I have any cascara left for sale on my web site. I do have some more if you are interested. I also have some very fresh and heavy madrona about 10" wide and 6" thick.

Here are a couple of pictures of a natural edge cascara bowl. The piece I turned it from was about 4" wide and 2 1/2" thick. The bark stays on cascara very well and the grain is very fine which makes it nice for turning natural edge bowls.

    Thanks for your kind comments.

When will you be in East Glacier, Montana?

Beautiful bowls, Dave. I would have guessed from the first pic that the middle one was the cherry! Just goes to show how much I know! My personal salad bowl is made from wild cherry and it has the same type of markings only smaller. I call it my ambrosia cherry.

Dave, I will be here in East Glacier until the first of August. I have to get back to South Georgia so I won't miss any hurricanes. Thanks for the info on the cascara and picture of the beautiful bowl.
