Moved to a new house, setting up shop all over again.

Well the move is almost over, and the new shop space is quite a bit larger.
I still need to bring the DJ-20, and 14" RAS over from my old house.

I ran a new sub panel (a while back) and just finished up the electrical yesterday.

How long have you spent setting up the new shop?

I know this would probably change for anybody else's circumstance... but how much of your old shop fixtures (cabinets, shelves, racks, etc.) did you employ at your new shop that you kept from your old shop?

It was a slow evolution, as I was also working on contracted work in between. I guess about 4 weeks total. And I still have 2 tools, a shelf, and cutoff cart to move.
I'm able to reuse EVERYTHING with the exception of the last shelf, it was built floor to ceiling in the old shop (12ft ceilings) and the new shop is only 8ft So I am either going to leave it as a selling perk in the old place, or cut it down for here. Not sure yet.

Isn't it amazing though how, even when we move to larger shops, they seem to instantly be full again? <g>

Last year I moved from a 2-car garage to 3 spaces in a large 4-car garage and it still looks full.

Perhaps if I had a 60'x80' with 24' ceilings.. Naw, my bride wouldn't let me back in the house if I mentioned that. Taking all but enough space for her minivan to squeeze into (plus fridge, freezer, shelves, etc.) in a 4-car was pressing my luck.

I haven't moved into my (still being planned) new shop, and I've already realized this - I'm out of space.

The reason is, is because I was WAY under-spaced in my old shop and, and I became under-spaced a tool at a time over several years. I grew to live in, and be accustomed to, an over crowded shop. I had some machines stacked up 3 and 4 deep in 1200 square feet, and upgrading to 1500 sf isn't going to cut it...

If I could move into a 5k sq ft shop I would.

I currently rent a 5k building for other purposes, but would LOVE to turn it into a wood shop if I ever had the opportunity.

Yes, there are always projects under way.
Just wish I could quit working on work, and play in my shop instead. haha


This floor plan very closely resembles the layout from my last shop, which took me 7yrs to evolve it into a good work flow.
This new shop has one extra assembly bench, and a new tool (the drum sander).

No way SWMBO will tolerate parking her car out in the snow.
Every time I think of expanding into my garage (where we park cars - imagine that) I remember the Winter of 2011...

I failed to mention that on the porch there is a Ridgid portable table saw, planer, and sander. The saw has a home-made router table. All sawdust making is done outside except band sawing because I got tired of rolling it out and there is a step down that makes it difficult. Look through my other videos and there is one showing the porch and also one showing an unexpected storm, which is something I deal with from time to time. By the way, I have also built two hot rod VW engines in the kitchen shop but I took them outside to fire them up!!!!

I am about to move, and the new place has a room that is not part of the kitchen but it was a bedroom and is still open to the house. I dream of a "real" workshop, but I kind of enjoy the challenge of the kitchen workshop.

I'm going to guess that you have no kids?
It's hard enough keeping my shop partially kid friendly, I couldn't imagine it being in the house with FULL kid access.

Thanks! I now have a daughter 5 months old. We are moving and the new shop will be a third bedroom that I can close off. If we didn't move I would partition the shop.

We are saving up to buy a piece of land and build a house with a workshop.
