Finally got this project finished for SWMBO.
The desk is made from Red Oak and finished with Waterlox Original. My father in law is a machinist by trade, so he was able to bend up the 1/2" brass bar stock for me. The lid is on a piano hinge, with briefcase latches to hold it closed when desired. The lid is propped up by a simple piece of wood that hinges up from the inside to rest in dados cut into the bottom of the lid (I made two dados at different heights so the lid can sit at different angles).
