    Swing Arbor

I just finished a project for my sister. It is actually a gift from her daughter. My sister inherited the 80+ year old white oak porch swing that hung on the porch of my grandfathers house for more years than anyone can remember. She had it on her porch until she moved to a newer house that didn't have a porch. They wanted a place to use the swing in her back yard, where she can sit in her garden and read or sew. I used plans from "Wood" magazine, but found several weak fastener applications and some missing dimensions in their plans. Nonetheless, I was able to complete the project with the addition of two side tables to hold beverages and/or snacks. Enjoy

Nothing common about what you've done with it.
This sort of thing is precisely why many of us started making things.

    How deep is the footing?
    How is it anchored?

I like the clean line of a single post, but the mechanics are beyond me.

The posts are set into the soil in 42" deep holes to get below our frost line. The posts are 6 x 6 and set into 10" bored holes. I put 4" of pea gravel in the bottom then filled the holes with concrete. With two large adults on the swing swinging gently you don't feel any movement in the posts as they swing. This swing won't see the type of swinging a regular child swing would see. The soil is heavy clay with some shale, so it should hold fine.
