Even stopped right in front of the house this time. After dropping off a torn up box two days ago, this time the box was intact. Today's box was a little different:SDC12774.jpg and inside this box..SDC12772.jpgI knew about the broken tote, during the sale. Some rust, but, NO BROKEN PARTS! This is how a plane SHOULD be shipped! And the plane? Wait for it....SDC12768.jpg a KK7, thank you very much. It does have a Stanley iron though. Stamped right on the iron is STANLEY, and right below that, PAT APR 19 02. A little narrower than the chip breaker.SDC12773.jpglever cap had a little bit of chipping, not bad. A look at this long plane

Dang thing quit loading pictures, for some reason, try again?SDC12770.jpgSDC12769.jpgSDC12771.jpgAt 19-3/8" long, big plane. The iron, chip breaker and frog from the DE6 are available as spare parts. DE's iron actually matches the KK7's chip breaker in width. Both of the frogs match each other. Even the laterals are alike. This should be a fun refurbish project. As for that broken plane, maybe turn the back "half" into a wide chisel plane, with a grooved bottom????

How large is your plane collection, it must be enormous? Do you focus on getting certain brands or types? DO you have pictures of the entire family all assembled together? Just curious.

I have a few planes, maybe 15, or so. I tend to stay away from the high dollar ones, so, Unions, sargents, and even some handymans. Oh, a Family Portrait? Most will be in these pictures..SDC12749.jpgThe Blocks,and a scrub plane. There are five jacks, including a Union #5A, a Bailey T16 #6, the KK7, and a bailey #8c. I also have six smoothers, three #3s, and three #4s. That's about it. The DE6 was coming in because it had a SDC12752.jpggrooved bottom.

You probably already know that the Keen Kutter KK7 was made for Simonds Hardware by Ohio Tool. Are you sure about the length? It should be closer to 22" long.

Just re-measured it. 19-3/8" long, with 4-1/8" from the rear of the tote to the heel, by 2-7/8" wide. The frog for this one, and the DE6 are the same size. Didn't LOOK like anyone had shortened the base, but it is a little squared off at the heel. IF they had shortened it, they alsodid a good job of rounding the corners down. Both look the same. The DE6 is just an 1-1/4 shorter than the KK7. So it might have been shortened sometime in it's lifetime...

I think a couple inches may have been removed from the end. As Greg mentioned, it should be 22".

As for that broken plane, maybe turn the back "half" into a wide chisel plane, with a grooved bottom????

A chisel plane needs a lower angle of attack. Try it and you may be able to make it work.

Some of my broken plane beds have been cut down and cleaned to be used as mounting pads for totes and knobs. Makes it easy to hold them in a vise while repairing, shaping, sanding and finishing.

It also is easier to keep the parts inventory straight if all the planes are from the same maker. The way you are going, you will have a nice set of planes and a lot of left over parts.

SDC12784.jpgSDC12781.jpgstarting to get a nice supply of parts. Got the frog off the wrecked DE6. The only difference between it and the KK7is the threads for the adjustor wheels. De was left handed, KK was right handed. Both are Union frogs. I also got the KK stripped down, and a coat of paint added.SDC12785.jpg with painter's tape over the bearing surfaces. Waiting on a new tote to arrive, as the Gutta Percha one from the DE6 came apart in three pieces. Trashcan. Did try the frogs outSDC12788.jpg Not too bad a day, storms and all.
