Here are a couple of pictures of a cherry bowl 3" tall and 9" in diameter that I was able to turn to 3/32" in thickness using a steady rest that Jim Ketron built for me. In the photos there is a dime to illustrate how thin this bowl is.
It was somewhat of a pain to finish as the finish kept bleeding through the thin end grain. You can hold it up to the sun and see shadows through it.
I don't know why I turned it so thin, just had a good time turning it.
