    Craftsman Bit Brace Question

Hello. I have here a Craftsman Bit Brace I acquired from a local auction ( got a box of a dozen assorted braces for a buck ($1), cant go wrong for that money).

I was going to use it, but noticed in between the jaws there is anothe piece of metal with a key hole cut out in it.

I know it prevents me from putting a bit in properly, although the previous owner did use it as is, as I can see metal wear on both sided of this additional metal plate.

Does any one know what this is?

Can I remove the plate to use the jaws like every other brace or is this something special?

    Thank you for your help.

    Christopher,

    Welcome to the Creek.

I have no idea what that piece was for. It should be possible to pop the spring out of one of the jaws and remove the extra piece.
