    Question - but no picture...

Hi folks, could anyone care to help on a conundrum? I have been given a piece of branch (about 3" in diameter, 7" long). It has a bark similar to pine / conifer / cedar - long and flaky pieces. Straight grained, "looks like hardwood, turns like softwood" was the quote from Jon, my turning partner. My wife took a look at it, and said "It's Yew"... Without the picture, I know it'll be difficult, so does anyone have a clue where to find tree types by bark, on the internet? - I'm going to start a search for it now btw.

I'm only asking, because if it's a pine derivative, I don't mind breaking it etc, if it IS Yew, I'm going to save it for something special (maybe even a freedom pen or two!).

    Thank you for any answers.

Most tree books will show pictures of the tree, leaf, flower or seed cones, and the bark. Yew tends to be an amber to orange color, and some times it will turn purple on fresh cuts. Not much scent to it.
