    Walnut Box

I have been going nuts making boxes since I got a renewed passion for woodworking and since I bought some beeeeautiful walnut.

    This is for a friend

Overall view, the top is some fine figured walnut, with a bird's eye maple inlay
On the front there are three white poplar inlays and one of my japanese crest thingies

Finish is Sam Maloof. I sanded the top to 12K grit, looks great in person

    Criticisms welcomed.

That's a really nice looking box and the figure in the wood is beautiful.

    Mark,

Beautiful box -- I really like the figure in the box top. I'm sure in person it really catches the light! Thanks for sharing

Oh, oh, oh man, I like that. Love the inlay and Tsuba details.

Absolutely beautiful. The walnut you're working is just gorgeous. I would absolutely love to get me some of that stuff. Just one critisism/suggestion, although there really isn't room or need for one. I think the inside lighter wall peices might be nice to be extended up beyond the lid with a bevel all around. Something like a cigar box, which gives the box a bit of a seal and creates a nice feel when closing the lid. It may or may not fit with what you had in mind though and is just a suggestion.

Me and my girlfriend are currently making boxes, her first endevour in WW. She chose walnut with a BE maple raised lid. I for some reason chose to use honduras rosewood as I have a charge of it. But both boxes are dovetialed and the rosewood is proving very difficult on chisels, saws, and fitting them together.

Anyways, just beautiful work and am glad to hear you're back in the swing of Woodworking. Is a great hobby.

Gorgeous Mark!! The walnut is(obviously) fantastic and your details (maple lined interior, decorative inlays) really make it unique.

    Very nice!!

Very nice. Where did you get that figured walnut?

Beautiful piece Mark, but a question. Is "white poplar" a different wood than tulip poplar? I'd be afraid of the poplar changing to a dull brown over time.
