I have wanted to combine my carvings with different mechanisms to create an artistic mechanical toy for some time. I wanted to do a carving that was different, that just didn't sit there! I am a fan of the work and techniques of Lybb Doughty's western carvings, Adina Huckins' jointed dolls, and Wanda Sowrey's artistic automata and I hope that their influences might be recognized in this work. The piece is about 20" high by 12" wide and is made of basswood, pine, and birch plywood. It is finished in acrylics, gold leaf, and satin polyurethane with metal and leather accents. The cowboy is jointed so that he can spur the horse on and try to stay in the saddle as the crank is turned in the front. Here is a little 2 minute video so that you can see this toy in action.
Thanks for looking and comments are always welcomed!
