    Gears

Art Fennerty (mach3 author) is developing a program called Gearotic.

I have been having a play with it.

    Some helical cut gears.

I have never previously tried to cut gears other than in 2D profile. These are done with a 4th axis.

    Tried some knuckle gears.

    Surprised how well they mesh.

The original writer of Mach3 wrote this as a separate program:

pretty reasonable for what it is IMHO

    Hey Greg,
Very nice. I am trying to find a good gear plug in for Rhino. Found one but the link disappeared. Found a stand alone app- Geargenerator- that makes the gears but you have to export them one at a time, so you have to recalculate centers each time to make sure there is no interference and a proper mesh.

    What material are you using?

    Thanks and ...

I found a Rhinoscript here. I do not know what it is like.

So far I have only cut a few gears out of corian scraps.

Next is to try in steel.

Those gears are really cute. I'm sure the kids will have a lot of fun playing with them. It is hard to believe that the odd shaped ones will work although I have seen the video of similar ones working fine.

    Nice work Greg.

    Greg,
    Very cool for the kids!

So it is not just for 4th axis stuff \? Those look like you cut flat on the table.

    Thanks,

    Hey Greg,
Those are cool gears. Kids love a Variety of colors.
What are you using to design and prove your gear assembly?

I tried the Gear plug-in for Rhino before but it seamed unable to get what I wanted but I will try again as I get more familiar with it. I did find a stand alone app "Gear Generator" but it only exports one gear at a time and no center hole. So you have to calculate and position them separately.

Found a simple gear tool in my TurboCad Pro platinum V16 but not very flexible.

BobCad v21 has a gear & v23 has a gear, sprocket and roller cam tool and I will play with it and watch the training videos to see how flexible it is.

Once again I appreciate your sharing ,inspiring and challenging us.

    Thanks and ...

Art Fennerty who wrote Mach3 is developing it.

This is what has inspired me to play around with gears just recently.

That is one cool program. A while back I purchased a program called involute. Gave you all kinds of control on your gear design.

Gearotic makes involute look like a toy. I just ordered a copy. Waiting eagerly for my licence so I can cut my first gear train.
