Tool Storage

My Dad and I are in the process of getting our woodshop up and functional. We have the stuff we need such as the power tools and a bunch of the handtools but we have nowhere to store hand tools. I'm looking for cabinet plans from people that they've found to be functional. I remember back in my shop classes a long time ago using cabinets that were about 5' X 5' that opened up and allowed for storage on the inside of the door along with shelves inside.
We've got quite a bit of wall space and I'd like to use that. I'm not real interested in something store bought as I would like to be able to take the time to build something unique to the shop.
I certainly appreciate any help anybody can throw my way.

PS. Kent I used french Cleats for all the "dumpster dive" cabinets I've used in my shop, works great while I'm feeling my way in this changing process.

I have a similar unit for too storage made from "virola" ply from HD. 36" wide X 48" tall and sits in a base cabinet. The doors are from 3/8 "virola" ply and are 4" deep. Imagine a box stood up on one end. The doors are attached to the cabinet with piano hinges. There are several small shelves at the bottom of each door to hold small items like boxes of screw etc. In the top portion of the doors are several cup hooks for hanging thin items.

The carcass is about 15" deep. There are several drawers in the bottom third (vertical divider goes up 1/3 of the height of the carcass). There is a swing out pegboard door in the part. The peg board door door is set back a few inches to allow things to be hung on both sides of it. The back of the cabinet is made up of pegboard also, again to hang things on.

Hopefully the attached picture will clear up my description.

Hi Kent. Always glad to have another Kent here in the Creek. I know you're going to like it here.

As for hand tool storage, I have mine split between those that I hang on a 4x8 piece of peg board (smaller hand tools) and those I keep in drawers (hand power tools). I don't have any dedicated cabinets that are just for tools.

This approach works for me but you may prefer dedicated cabinets. Ted's cabinet sure is well conceived and executed.

Kent, welcome to the Creek! As you may have guessed, we like to have a bit of fun out here, as well as WW tips, etc...

I think I know what you're talking about. The school district where I worked in a past lifetime, had something similar in their shop. Basically, on the same order as Ted's, but the doors went full length and the parts which opened, were close to a foot deep! They stored quite a bit of heavy stuff in those doors, too! As I recall, they accomplished that by putting the "doors" on heavy duty, continuous hinges and then rested both doors at the outside corners with heavy duty swivel casters. Worked great!
