What do the Subscribe to this Forum and Subscribe to this Thread buttons mean/do?

These buttons add you to a list of subscribers who will receive
an email anytime a new post comes in for that thread-- useful if
you're monitoring responses to a particular topic.

Note: If the thread is active, you will only receive 1 email letting
you know that the subscribed thread has changed, until the
next time you visit the board.

Also, when you post a reply, you have the option of automatically
subscribing to a thread by checking the "Email notification" checkbox.

If you subscribe to a thread it is kind of like Ebay when you want to track a particular item you are bidding on. This is just my guess. Same thing with subscribing to a forum. When you log in using your username and password it will show up on your user page (or what ever it is called). Take this as a guess .This forumn is still new to me too.
Still playing with all the gizmos of Sawmill creeck.
