Jet 8" Jointer Guard - Paint rubs off

Today I noticed that the faint red streaks that are randomly smeared across a pile of freshly jointed white oak are from the guard on my jointer (Jet, 8", JJ8CS, 2008). I've since sanded the (probably lead-based) paint off, down to the chiwaneese pot metal, but am concerned that this will just leave gray streaks on the stock instead of the red.

If I repaint, what should I use so that it won't rub off? Is anyone aware of an aftermarket guard that's less cheesy?

I suspect that painted aluminum throat plates would also have the same problem.

What does everyone else do?

My Grizzly 12 inch does the same. I just sand the paint off later.

Wrap it in packing tape. Or make your own from wood -- shouldn't be too difficult.

Adhesive backed umhw. I think you can get it in short lengths from McMaster-Carr.

Or get a chunk of umhw, and cut a thin slice off and some double sided tape.

Or just don't worry about it. Anything going across a jointer is hardly a finished product anyway.

Hey, that's a good idea. I've got some in the drawer. My Grizzly paint hasn't rubbed off but I like the idea of the pork chop not slamming into the fence on every return.

You could also just sand the paint off the part that touches the wood and protect it with the same stuff you use to protect the cast iron beds.

I'm going to go with the tape. I've never tried any UHMW tape, but I'll order some (Rockler's got free shipping right now). Making a new porkchop out of wood is something that I never thought of. I might try that at some point if mine cracks.

Hmm.....wonder whatever happened to that thing?? Long gone. LOOOONG gone.

Adjust the fence in + out for each board width so there is no extra blade showing.

Karl, you rock. I just applied some UHMW tape I keep around for just such things. I did have a useless little rubber bumper on there but it, of course, missed except for when I had the fence just so.

I had put uhmw tape on the foot of the fence the day I assembled and it has done an excellent job of avoiding table scratches whilst adjusting the fence. I never thought about applying it to the pork chop.
