    Sculpted Rocking Chair

Here is my latest rocking chair, number six. It is in Curly Walnut from Austin Hardwoods in Santa Ana, CA. It is designed by Hal Taylor who offers instructions and support for anyone interested in building their own. This one was interrupted by several other jobs so I am relieved to be finished after a year of work.

Questions and critiques welcome, thanks for looking.

This is a major design change from the older style. I think it really improves the flow of the design and while a lot of work it seems worthwhile.

The figure is pretty striking up close.

The back slats have a flame pattern that transitions a lighter seat to a darker headrest.

Thanks to fellow SMC'er Sascha Gast for the photos (the goods ones that is).

Richard - outstanding job on the rocker. I particularly like the soft sheen of the finish. What type of finish did you use?

I already loved the chair. Now the photos are fantastic too.

Maybe I asked you this before, but what sanding / burnishing / finishing did you use?

Amazing -- what an awesome rocker! The wood is beautiful and it exemplifies your fine craftsmanship. Thanks for posting....this type of project is something I would love to undertake someday.

What kind of upholstery are you going to put on the seat?

Beautiful chair in a beautiful wood. Not much else to say...

    Brian,
I just got done pm-ing Shawn with the same info........

    1) Industrial Abrasives Rhyo disc on a ROS 100,220,320
    2) Abralon 500 to burnish the wood.
    3) Deft Danish Clear with a paper towel, wipe on a lot, wait 20 minutes wipe off. Keep watching and wiping for another hour.
    4) Another coat in two days.

This recipe is straight out of Hal's book. There are other good papers but a lot of bad paper so the recommendation for the IA stuff is more to save time and trouble than the actual final finish. 2Sand is the one place I have found that has both products and I think he is a member here.

For anyone using stain this isn't a good finish schedule. If you are using stain on a rocking chair please don't tell me.

What's to critique? From the wood selection to the craftsmanship, that chair looks perfect in every way.

    Stunning!
