    Rummaging

    I was rummaging through a box and found this old rattle. I turned a number of these about twenty-five years ago and this was one of the poorer ones that I didn't give away. I turned a nice one for a granddaughter who kept it with her twenty-four hours a day. She played with it, teethed on it, sucked on it, beat on things with it and just generally refused to part with it. Her mother finally put it away so she could have it later in life. Sure glad no one told her walnut is dangerously poisonous because she never had any reactions or problems with it. Just shows that what you don't know can't hurt you.(-;

    Don that's a very nice looking rattle. I like the detail of the different size rings.

    I didn't know they had captive ring tools back then.

    Again very nice. After the wife gets home today I will be sending the 4 I made for the twins.

    Years ago when I was first getting into this wood stuff I had a shopsmith and messing with the lathe turned captive rings with a skew. Steve

    That is what I used mostly.

    I used the skew for the undercutting and shaping the rings. I also used a half inch skew to cut the beads on the spindle. I didn't give this one away because for some reason I didn't finish cutting the beads on the spindle and also the rings were a little flat and I like them round.
