    Guard on DJ 20

I recently purchased a used DJ 20 ( about 15 years old). The guard does not work properly. That is it doesn't return to position once a pass is taken (stays open).I took it apart and nothing seems broken, I replaced the spring but that didn't fix it either. Suggestions please.

Mine has had the same problem, the spring wears out over time. What do you mean by "replace the spring"? I replaced mine with the correct Delta part and it works.

    Mark,
The spring has to be wound up in order to return the guard.

Conrad is correct. Loosen the hex screw on top of the guard's pivot, use a channel lock to twist the ring that is immediately under the pivot, then re-tighten the hex screw.

Heck, I wish I had a weaker/softer spring on mine.
Even when set to it's minimum the spring itself has too much torsion(?).

Yeah, I did that but still doesn't solve my problem if the spring itself has too much tension.
Any way to reduce the tension in the spring?

Disassemble the guard spring assembly. Check to ensure the spring pins are correctly aligned. Inside the assembly are flats onto which the spring pins seat. It may be possible that one of the pins on the tension spring is seated incorrectly which is resulting in excessive tension. It is a simple device, you should have no difficultly reassembling and troubleshooting once you see how it operates.
