    Picture of Recent Work

This magnolia bowl came from a tree that was cut down last November. I roughed turned the bowl, coated it with Anchorseal, and returned and finished it last week. The finish I used was a mixture of equal parts of polymerized tung oil, spar varnish, and turpentine. I applied a coat, let it dry for 24 hours, then another, and one more. I let it cure and then buffed. Thanks for looking.

Glenn, nice bowl! I never thought about turning magnolia. We have a lot of them in this area and frequently are the victims of hurricanes. What are its working characteristics? Softwood, I presume? Interesting grain and color. Thanks for sharing. In my neck of the woods there are relatively few choices to harvest and turn. Pine, oak, poplar, pine, sorry maple, pine, cypress, pine and pine. Did I mention we have pine?

You Might Want To Try This!

Thank you for your kind words about the magnolia piece. Michael, the wood is relatively medium soft and cuts like butter. I wish I could get more of it. The poor picture does not show the swirls of grain patterns in the piece. The large dark section in the front of the picture was a large void. I filled it in with coffee grounds and thin CA glue. It looks so natural that in person no one has even questioned me about it. If you haven't tried it you might want to fill a void with it sometimes. I thought it matched the other dark parts of the bowl. What do you all think?
