    Lightbulb tool grinder station... (pics-o-plenty)

    Good Day to the Creek,
I found that my growing pile of lathe toys was a growing mess.
Frustrating to find spendy accessories when you need them,
and nowhere to put them when finished with them.
So, I did some flatwork, to enhance my round work.

I use 3/4" maple plywood for all my shop cabinets.
    Tablesawn dado carcass assembles nicely.
Keen eyes may spot the full 3/4" carcass back, for structural rigidity.
Since I planned to use locking casters, this ensured zero flex.
[tip for hardcore turners - those red things are called clamps]

My planned spindles were 26" long to hang my gear.
Kinda tricky with a 24" lathe.
On my way to finally adding my 20" bed extension, I mounted the bed hinge...
which provided enough bonus bed to turn my desired length of spindle.
Each hinge leaf adds a full inch, for a handy +2.
Keen eyes may spot my tail hanging...

The cabinet has a 3/4" top on the carcass, plus I added another
3/4" top panel wrapped in plastic laminate on both sides.(wanted an overhang)
Just a habit, I always wrap both sides for longterm flatness & durability. (overkill in this case!)
Before mounting the blue-wrapped top, I drilled a pair of 1.5" holes at the drillpress.
It was a pleasure to turn my first round tenons, which press fit sweet and snug.

Question grinder station - part deux

    On we roll...
So I used 8/4" QSW oak for my spindles,
which were leftover from my Morris chair build.
These big dowels come to hand with nice heft, and will be
embellished back on the lathe when my skills grow.
I love the way turning between centers lets me mount and remount
perfectly for further work... very satisfying.

The twin towers will be capped with additional turnings.
One like a bowl to securely hold my shiney new air helmet...
another some-sorta finial to hold my turning smock, when I can afford one!
    fresh-helmet-stand.jpg twin_towers.jpg

The grinder station is functional now, which relieves some frustration
and ugly mess. I aim to add drawers when I get a round-tuit. (?)
You can see why I wanted my uprights at 26 inches...
to hover above the grinder mess, and keep my gear super-handy.
No excuses not to wear my helmet, which is now right-there within reach.
Bonus convenience - the Trend Pro battery can be charged in helmet, on stand.(woohoo)
    grinder_station_side.jpg grinder_station.jpg

This begins to solve the grinder station plus jigs junkpile.
Next I need to build a lathe accessory organizer of some sort... (??)
If you think I am kidding...
I am green new at this turning thing, and I am already drowning in mess!
Ya... that's my bed extension gooped in Cosmolene - turns out I don't need it yet.
    lathe_mess.jpg

So, I appeal to my fellow Creekers of the vortex...
    Please.....
SHOW ME your lathe chisels and accessory shop organization PLEASE!!
I gotta do something before I twist my ankle.
***Just decided I will ask this question as a new turning thread***

Worse, as soon as I heal my still-smoking credit card...
I aim to scorch it all over again - with more cool lathe toys!
    Thanks for looking,
    see you in the sawdust,
    Walt

    Exclamation Thanks to Gary Z.

    Lastly, but NOT leastly...

I want to thank Gary Zimmel, my fellow new vortex victim...
and friend-I-have-yet-to-meet from 2000 miles away,
for thoughtfully sending me a Wolverine tool platform plus a pair of jig bases.

I have been putting them to work like crazy, as I try to learn to
sharpen my lathe tooling. [my kingdom for an edge!]
Thanks pal, it enhances the enjoyment to be learning all this fun turning along with you.
Safe and Happy Turning to All,
    be well,
    Walt

Walt very nice job on the grinder stand. I may steal your design, I need to improve the piece of plywood nailed to the wall in the corner that I call a stand.
I built a stand for my DVR 3000 that has turning tool and accessory storage. you can see pics in this thread.

This may provide some additional ideas for sharpening station designs:

Looks like you are already outgrowing this lathe...

Better start planning on a bigger one!

Good job on the grinder stand. I have been trying to figure out what to do with my situation. I have a semi-functional stand, not the best looking, but sturdy on flat ground.

Looks like you are getting alot more orginized than I.

My glue up table looks like your one pic. Lots of turning tools on it.
A grinder stand/cabint will have to move higher on my to do list.
And a tool rack to make sure my tools don't roll off on to the floor......
