    Wood inlays with self adhesive wood thins?

    Just wondering if anyone had done any work with inlays using the self adhesive wood thin veneers? My inlays look great for a day or two then the veneer starts to release or curl. I tried spraying with a poly eurothane but then is seems to break down the glue even more? thanks Lynn

    Veneer Inlays

    Hi Lynn;
    I don't recommend making inlays with the self-adhesive veneers. The adhesive on most of them is heat activated (iron-on) and is really no better than glue gun adhesion. I've found the best results with ordinary yellow glue and thick veneers- not the 1/42" stuff. I now cut my own veneers on a bandsaw and thickness them on a thickness sander to about 1/16". This also provides some extra thickness for sanding. Here's a couple of examples:

    What kind of sander do you have that can do 1/16"?
    Or do you use a backer block, if so, how do keep the material in place. (adhesive?)

    Thanks

    Drum Sander

    Shaddy;
    It's a Performax 16-32 drum sander with 120 grit .No backer block or adhesive needed.
