Woodworking around Harrisburg, PA

Well it looks like my wife and I may be relocating to PA; I believe to Duncannon/Newport area. I don't know a lot about this area and I was wondering what type of woodworking I can expect.

Are there any good sources for lumber at reasonable prices?
Are there any good sources for woodworking tools and supplies?
Are there any woodworking clubs?

Trying to get a handle on what I can expect and will need to checkout in the next few weeks.

I don't know much about Harrisburg, but spent one night in a Red Roof and could see a HF and a Woodcraft store from the motel, I think it was Harrisburg? That was 2 years ago and had to stop because of a ice storm. That was one road I will not forget anytime soon.

But seriously, that is one negative of leaving VA for PA more winter.

Mike, yes, there is a Woodcraft just off 281 north of the Turnpike junction.

Ken, there are innumerable sources for lumber in the PA and particularly central PA area. I don't think you'll have too much trouble with supplies!

Local Woodcraft Store

There is a general woodworking club meeting held there the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30, a women's woodworking club meeting the third Tuesday, and I think a turners' and carvers' meeting the other two Tuesdays.

Further south, there is another club in York the fourth Thursday of the month.

You're definitely not going to have a hard time finding lumber. Alderfer Lumber is where I usually go, but there are plenty of places.

you'd be about 70 miles from Grizzly's Muncy store.

Yes, definitely check out grizzly in muncy/williamsport, incredible place. Also take a look at hearne hardwoods. Bit of a hike from harrisburg but worth the run.

Groff and Groff and Hearne Hardwoods are a couple hours drive.
All the wood your wallet can stand.

Bill Grumbine is in the area if you want turning lessons.

Cherry lumber as far as the eye can see.

I'd say you are in a good place to do some woodworking.

Been so busy planning and working to get things going with the move; I forgot all about Grizzly having a store up there. Shows just how out of focus I have been the last few weeks. I will mapquest that and get the mileage.

I guess there is no shortage of lumber suppliers and a Woodcraft. So I guess I am in okay shape that way.

I tried to get all the way to State College, PA but Harrisburg was a close as I could get. Well I am only about 1:20 from "good old state".

You will be about an hour and a half from the Hicksville Planing Mill near Clear Spring, Maryland (off I-70). Run by Mennonites who are quite friendly and helpful. Great selection of hardwoods at reasonable prices. Inexpensive planing and edging. They're great about allowing you to pick through their stock as long as you re-stack it. It's worth the trip , especially if you need more than just a few dozen board feet.
