Thanks Lee. Sapele is a little heavier than walnut, and a little lighter than white oak. This piece is not all solid wood (I usually only make solid wood furniture)....

If you are worried about maximizing chatoyance, you may just need to sand to a higher grit. See below entry as there is a link to an article on chatoyance and sanding.

Dying seems like the way to go...your first sample does look like it is in the neighborhood, but just more dye is needed. Todd's sample is close as well. You are definitely more patient than me...

I had good luck with Arm-r-seal. However I will use a Wooster Foam King foam brush on any surface I can apply to in a horizontal position. I finid it easier on the large flat surfaces to use the...
